Flashback/Flash-forward Episodes

This page will contain two types of episodes.

First, flashback episodes.  Whether its the story of how Homer and Marge met, or how Maggie was born, or even how Homer was part of a Grunge Band in the 90s somehow.

Flash-forward episodes, of which there are a few, are episodes that go into the future of that episode's specific time frame.  Crazy things like college-grad Lisa, Bart the bum, and poor fates for everyone else!

Season 02 - Episode 12-025

Given Year of Flashback: 1974, seventeen years prior to start
The story of how Homer first met Marge as high school seniors.

02) I Married Marge

Given Year of Flashback: 1980-1981, eleven years prior to start
The story of how Homer married Marge because Marge was pregnant with Bart.

03) Lisa's First Word
Season 04 - Episode 10-069
Year Episode Aired: 1992
Given Year of Flashback: 1983-1984, nine years prior to start
The story of how Homer, Marge and Bart moved into their current house, how Lisa was born and what all three kids' first words were (Lisa's being the focal point of course).

04) Homer's Barbershop Quartet
Season 05 - Episode 01-082
Year Episode Aired: 1993
Given Year of Flashback: 1985, eight years prior
The story of how Homer, Skinner, Apu and eventually Barney were a famous barbershop group for about five and a half weeks.
Score: 9.5

05) And Maggie Makes Three
Season 06 - Episode 13-116
Year Episode Aired: 1995
Given Year of Flashback: 1993, two years prior
The story of how Maggie was born and how Homer had to quit his dream job at the bowling alley to help pay for it, and where all of Maggie's pictures are located as a result.

06) Lisa's Sax
Season 09 - Episode 02-181
Year Episode Aired: 1997
Given Year of Flashback: 1990 (though the episode states it was only five years ago)
The story of Bart's first days of kindergarten which was supposed to be about the story of how Lisa first got her saxophone.

07) The Way We Weren't
Season 15 - Episode 20-333
Year Episode Aired: 2004
Given Year of Flashback: none (it happens when Homer was 10, so a little under 30 years earlier)
The story of how Homer kissed a girl before he met Marge, but the girl actually was Marge but neither realized it, and the story behind why young girl Marge ended up hating young boy Homer.

08) That '90s Show
Season 19 - Episode 11-411
Year Episode Aired: 2008
Given Year of Flashback: Unspecified year in the 1990s (around 15 years prior, I guess?)
The story of how Homer paid for Marge to go to college, but she became infatuated with a radical professor, so Homer rebelled and started up a grunge band before they eventually made up and had Bart.

09) Dangerous Curves

Given Year of Flashback: none (two flashbacks occur 20 and five years ago, respectively)
The story of how a simple lodge has, on three separate occasions, solidified Homer and Marge's relationship with one another.

The story of how Bart and Lisa, six years ago, always fought one another until a series of events got them to understand each other a little more.

The story of how the Simpsons and the Flanders went to the Grand Canyon together.

Given Year of Story: 2010, fifteen years later
The story of Lisa's first love, when she's in college, but not really because her family is just too much for that guy to deal with.

02) Bart to the Future
Season 11 - Episode 17-243

Given Year of Story: 2030, thirty years later
The story of how Bart, a colossal bum, goes to the White House to hang with his sister, President Lisa Simpson.

Given Year of Story: 2013, eight years later
The story of Bart and Lisa, both graduating from high school, deal with their supposed sweethearts in completely different ways.

The story of Bart and Lisa, now parents, have difficulties connecting with their own kids, while Maggie, a big rock star, is about to become a parent of her own.

05) Days of Future Future
Season 25 - Episode 18-548
Year Episode Aired: 2014
Given Year of Story: 2044, thirty years later
The story of how Homer continuously dying and being replaced by clones of him sets up Bart learning to move on from his ex-wife Jenda and Lisa dealing with Milhouse's newfound zombie life.

Given Year of Story: none, events occur when Bart is 6, 8, 12, 15, 18 and 20.
The story of Boyhood, but with Simpsons characters instead.

07) Mr. Lisa's Opus
Season 29 - Episode 08-626
Year Episode Aired: 2017
Given Year of Story: none, events mostly take place 10 years in the future
Lisa, in an admissions letter to Harvard, recaps the major events of her life to that point.
