This is completely plausible. |
Homer and the family, sans Lisa, go to a new steakhouse which Lisa had been wanting to protest. There, Homer enters a steak-eating contest where he will attempt to eat a 16 pound steak. The feat had been done by only two other people: Tony Randall, and Red Barclay. Red, a trucker who is currently in the steakhouse, tries to convince Homer not to go through with it, but Homer taunts Red and so Red enters the contest as well. As the contest wears on, Homer finds himself unable to finish the entire steak, much to his surprise. Red finishes his steak once again but dies immediately afterwards from 'beef poisoning'. Other truckers mourn Red's death, commentating that Red had never missed a shipment in 38 years but will miss this last one of his. Pretty much responsible for Red's death, Homer decides to make Red's delivery, and on time, bringing Bart along for kicks.
Somewhat upset that Homer is on yet another adventure, Marge decides to go a little crazy herself. She goes to a doorbell store, Señor Ding Dong, to get one, buying a doorbell which chimes out 'why do birds suddenly appear'. After installing it, Marge tries to wait for someone to ring it, but when nobody does, Lisa goes ahead and does it herself. However, the chime won't stop playing, and gets exponentially louder when Marge tries to cut the sound. As townspeople go to complain and destroy the doorbell, Señor Ding Dong himself comes to fix the bell. Craaaaazy.
Homer and Bart's truckin' adventure is going well enough, but as the two stop at pretty much everything they end up well behind schedule. Homer tries to do an all-nighter using way too many pep pills, using way too many sleeping pills to combat the effect of the pep pills, and falls asleep from the sleeping pills. However, the truck ends up driving itself, thanks to a strange auto-driving box installed in all the trucks which truckers are keeping secret so that they can keep getting paid for "driving" the truck. Homer agrees to keep it secret, but soon abuses the autodrive box in public. Realizing that their secret is about to be blown, other truckers move to stop and probably hurt Homer. Homer tries to outtruck them, but as his own box bails on him, Homer is able to luck his way past the other truckers, and continues onward. The other truckers contemplate their situation, but decides to scam more money in a different manner.
Homer arrives at his stop in time, honoring Red's memory, and completes the delivery of some artichokes and migrant workers. As they are no longer able to drive the truck, Homer's request for another miracle is answered when a position to conduct a train containing napalm back to Springfield is opened up for Homer to take.
Quick Review
This ended up being an alright episode. The laughs weren't quite there in volume, but nothing was really a 'miss', either. The doorbell subplot didn't really have much going for it though Marge's hopes for somebody to ring the doorbell had its moments. The main plot was alright though it got kinda over-the-top towards the end, but it ended on a funny note (by which I mean not the Señor Ding Dong bit, that was just weird).
Final Score: 7.5
