Someone thinks this is clever writing! (Pro tip: its not me) |
Homer sleeps at work, which causes a disaster bad enough to hospitalize him. Though Homer is fine, he and his family learn that Homer also has narcolepsy, which was why he was sleeping at work. He's given medical approval to avoid doing difficult tasks as a result of the narcolepsy, and naturally Homer uses it to avoid doing anything, including getting his narcolepsy medication. This change causes a rift between him and Marge, enough so that she suggests the two of the them seek marriage counseling.
There, the therapist is so appalled at their relationship that she suggests an open, trial seperation, which Marge and a more reluctant Homer agree to try. Homer leaves Marge, opting to live at the nuclear plant in the interim. Given signs that Marge has no intention of taking him back, a depressed Homer goes to get his narcolepsy medication. There, his pharmacist, Candace, picks up on Homer's woes and quickly decides to go out with him, partly because she realizes he's a lonely man with a bag full of drugs willing to go out and get drunk. After a wild night of booze and narcolepsy drugs, Homer wakes up the next morning next to Candace; its been implied they slept together.
Homer tries calling Marge again in a panic, but is met by only a smug Selma. Apparently giving up, Homer decides to go out with Candace, spending time with her and her friends. One night, Homer agrees to meet Candace's father, who is also dating a younger woman. Turns out, that woman is Marge, and the four meet up awkwardly. Candace and her father have their own issues to work out, and Candace's father quickly proposes to Marge, who accepts. Candace then reveals to Homer that she's pregnant, freaking him out...
...then he wakes up, in the therapist's office, as he had been dreaming. This time around, the therapist suggests Homer simply make strives towards improvement. One month in, Homer's improvements were so grand, Lisa takes up eating meat again and Maggie now has an excellent singing voice. Homer notices this, and realizes something is wrong...
...then he wakes up, at a bar, being given alcohol by Candance. Realizing that was a dream, Homer panics and runs home to find Marge and Candace's father living together. Lisa goes outside to give Homer minor sympathy but goes away when Candace's father entices her with pony rides and such. Homer cries his heart out due to his miserable situation...
...then Marge wakes up in her bed, that entire sequence of events and dreams just being her own dream. She and Homer visit the therapist some time later, and learns that the sequence of events is likely a combination of how lousy her marriage is with Homer and her desire to stay with Homer. The therapist is about to offer a solution to Marge's dilemma, but the scene morphs into the tattoo of some woman who offers rather blunt advice: don't get drunk in Brooklyn.
Quick Review
Ah, one of these kinds of episodes. You know, the ones that start well (good jokes even with the tired ol' "Homer and Marge break up" theme), but then fall apart when it gets into the meat of the plot?
No different here. Once Candance gets properly introduced to the episode, the episode's jokes and humor take a nosedive. Once the plot gets into "its all dreams" territory, there was nothing left to salvage, and the ending (the woman at the end is voiced by the same person as Candace, the 'popular' Lena Dunham) was stupid too.
Honestly, I expected worse from this episode but its strong start saved it from a much, much worse score.
Final Score: 6.6
