Oh, he's fine. |
In a very special episode of the Simpsons, after trying out a new sushi bar with a George Takei-voiced waiter, Homer is believed to of ingested the poisonous portions of an otherwise delicious blowfish and is given just 22 hours to live. To that end, Homer creates a list of things he wishes to accomplish for his final day. Unfortunately, Homer's final day doesn't go quite as planned.
Waking up at 11:30, Homer quickly spends time with Bart and Lisa, and borrows Flanders' camera so he can make a movie for Maggie (he also promises Flanders he'll attend his barbecue the next day, and bring some juicy steaks along too, but of course Homer would be dead the next day!). He then goes to the retirement home to make peace with his father, which goes a bit too well. Suddenly, Homer spends the bulk of his day fishing, playing catch, and so on with the old man, taking out a lot of things on his list. Trying to make up for lost time, Homer is caught speeding by the cops and, upon his insistence on a quick ticket, gets thrown in jail instead. Homer gets Barney to post bail for him, but Barney insists he have a last beer at the bar.
Finally, Homer gets home, rather late, and he has just enough time to be intimate with Marge. Afterward, with Marge asleep, Homer goes to the living room and listens to the "Good Book", on videotape as told by Larry King. He falls asleep while listening, and its presumed he eventually goes into the 'deep sleep'. However, the next morning, Marge finds him and, determining that Homer's drool is still warm, is ecstatic to find him still alive. Homer, upon waking, celebrates and states that from then on, he'll live life to its fullest. Which includes sitting around watching bowling while eating pork rinds. Don't tell me that's not living life to the fullest. He also has to go to Flanders' barbecue and is going to have to deal with telling off Mr. Burns, but hey.
Quick Review
Despite the episode's theme, there was a lot of laughter to be had throughout as Homer struggles to get through his 'last day'. Whether it was the master sushi chef being unavailable to cut the blowfish because of his engagement with a certain 4th grade teacher, Barney's prime apartment locale, or poor old Grampa, this is one of Season 2's better episodes, and no death or almost death slowed it down.
Final Score: 8.2
