Don't worry, he'll die from obesity complications before the radiation gets him. |
Bart's last baby tooth falls out, and he's expecting a large sum of money from the 'tooth fairy'. Instead, Bart receives a message that money had instead been donated in his name to charity. Bart is upset, but his parents tell him it was a 'grown up' present for Bart. Bart refuses to admit he's growing up, but with his diminishing imagination and all, he finally accepts that fact.
Still not happy about it, Bart writes a message on his t-shirt that reads "adults suck, then you are one". The shirt, followed by several others, are instant hits at school, so Bart decides to sell them for profit... until the police shut him down. Lisa suggests he try catching on at a novelty expo, but nothing doing. On his way out of said expo, Bart is hit by a car, owned by a rather eccentric fellow who owns a novelty shop. This crazy man, Goose Gladwell, decides to sell Bart's shirts at his store, and Bart can reap a percentage of the profits. This works very well for Bart and the family, as the money he gets from his t-shirts are enough to finance the entire family.
After Homer gets fired from work for wearing one of Bart's suggestive shirts, Homer declares he doesn't even need the job as Bart's income is more than enough to keep his family going, being rather rude about it to all. However, after watching a documentary about lions, Homer realizes that Bart is the official head of the house now but instead of rotting away like Grampa, he spends time with Lisa instead. He learns Lisa is working on a science project about the history of nuclear fission, however she's going to have a tough to winning 1st prize with Martin Prince unveiling a fully functional robot to her. Homer decides to help out by building a fully functional reactor for her, stealing some plutonium from the plant to make it active. However, the reactor is unstable and both Lisa and Marge force him to get rid of it somehow.
Meanwhile, Gladwell reveals that he's sold the rights to Bart's shirts to the Disney Corporation, and that thanks to his lawyers, Bart will never receive another cent for the shirts again. Bart leaves the store in distress, and comes across Homer who is still wheelbarrowing the reactor around. He helps Bart out by threatening Gladwell to give Bart his profits, or else he'll activate the reactor in his store. Gladwell relents, Bart gets his money, Homer's status as the supposed 'alpha male' is restored, and the reactor is going to the dumpster.
Quick Review
After a string of lesser episodes to start the season, this episode stands out as the best among these early season entries. The episode is at its best when Homer builds his unstable reactor, but for the most part there's enough consistent comedy throughout the episode to make this one of Season 16's early highlights.
Final Score: 8.1
